metal halide lamps put off way more heat than an hps.... by a lot... couldnt tell you exact degrees.. but it is quite significant...

yes.. they are 500 a piece.. but.. here is what makes them so good...

1) your may concern was heat.. they barely get to 90 degrees running temp... even after 24 hours of straight on you can touch the bulbs with no problems... you can literally keep them under an inch away from your plants with no issues at all.. even seedlings...

2) each ballast puts off 44,000 lumens.. thats almost as many lumens as a 400 hps... what this means is that with the ability to get within a inch or less of your plants they actually get WAY over 44,000 lumens.. since lumen ratings are rated at 1 foot from the light source, and you can get them well under 1 foot from the canopy, you are getting WAY WAY over 44,000 lumens... closer to 80 or 90 thousand...

3) they are 420w... which isnt much more than an hps...

4) bulbs are rated for something like 15000 hours or something.. and since they are floros the lumen rating is a steady number and the bulbs never lose their strength until they are out.. HID lamps have an initial rating (usually the number they give) and a mean rating (after they fire up they lose some of their lumens and "power"), plus they have to be changed every few grows to be kept up...

i have 4 of them.. i've used them to veg and flower all my grows so far... if you want to see what they can do check out my youtube video or journal.. both links are below... i do have, and am getting some hps lamps.. but mainly the hps lamps i have now were bought because they were cheap and i was short on money and needed more lights.. and the other hps lamps i am getting are 4 x 1000ws for my flower room... but if they ever make a 1000w version of these floros i will sell the hps and switch...

they will out preform the 400w hps.... i promise... just gotta get past the price point...

i'd say 4 to 8... i'd try to keep it closer to 4 to 6 though... and keep them under 18" for final height to get the most out of your light...

Thanks for the reply mate, will this light here give me good results for vegging? there gonna be in a tent while my current grow finish flowering (roughly 5weeks to go) ideally i'd like my cuttings to get to 22"s tall in this time, would this light be capable for achieving this? thanks mate! nice video by the way

this light SHINES during veg.. it provides some of the most amazing veg growth i've seen.. you'll have nice short fat stocky plants for sure!! and i flowered plants that ended up being around 5 feet tall my last grow.. so your goal of 22" is more than do able!!

the link i gave you has a much stronger light.. thats the one that i said "shines"

the ones you gave a link to are fine.. just not as strong.. so plant height would need to be taken more into consideration..
