Q: From seed is the only way to identify females is to go to flowering? ... but my clones from (late) flowering adults have turned out weird with huge, twisted, non serrated leaves.
The only alternative I can think of is to clone many of the
matured seedlings before 12/12 and mark them,
( mother A, clone A etc) then after the adults flower, destroy the clones of the males. That is a lengthy process and needs a lot of space. Any alternative ???

When I start seeds, and I rarely do, (someone else usually does this except this year I have) I like to wait til they preflower before starting any work such as mothering and cloning. Preflowers will appear at 8-12 weeks or age. You can still veg them and put them outside etc.... and than identify the sex on the fly if your strapped for time.

Thats what people that do elaborate grows do, propagate maybe 10 seeds clone them, mark the clone to mother, kill off the male and select their favorite couple to use as moms from that point till they get tired of the strain at which point they will finish using that strain and start again from a new propagation.

As a matter of fact I have 10 plants outside and 10 copies rooting in my house for further work down the road, like identifying what I want for mommy, and what are males.

There is nothing wrong with taking clones from a flowering plant - they will look like mutants for awhile but will eventually start to grow the serrated leaves. I take clones from flowering plants all the time.
