Default About to start First grow in a few days... few questions?
I have been lurking this site since about Nov/Dec, and originally planned on starting my first grow around January, but realized I would be gone for a week or so off and on until now, so I got pushed back until now.

I only want to grow 1 plant my first time around, but I was advised by many of yall to start atleast 2, hoping both wouldnt be male. I have about 6 bagseeds about done germinating now. My grow room is a closet that is about 5' x 3' (8' or 9' ceiling). I am starting with 4 CFL bulbs and then adding more as needed. I plan on starting my plants in cups and then moving them to 5 gallon buckets (good idea?). I am using Scotts Moisture Advantage Premium Potting Soil... prob not the best but hopefully it will do ok? On the bag, it says the soil will feed the plants continuously for 4 months... and keeping in mind its my first grow and these are just some mid bagseeds, can I make it the whole grow cycle without any ferts?

ANY suggestions are greatly appreciated, but please keep in mind that I am trying to keep this low budget (for now) since its my first go at it. I plan on taking pics every few days of my grow, but we'll see how they turn out, as my camera is back home and I will have to use my iPhone for now?

using the 5 gallon pots is a good idea.. more room for roots = larger roots mass = stronger plants... as far as soil with timed released nutes, i dont like them... here is why... EVERYTIME you water nutes are released... so you have NO control how much your plant is getting fed.. this typically leads to nute burn and possibly a dead plant.. and its a headache to fix nute burn cause you have to flush your plants and let them bounce back.. if its really bad sometimes you dont know if they will bounce back... its just a lot of headaches and shit... if you are going to use that try to mix it at least in a 50/50 mix with plain potting soil... just to "thin out" the nutes a little...

hope this helped.. good luck

Thanks sampson for the quick reply.... I thought about doing that ( mixing half/half) but I really dont want to have to fool with adding nutes later, because I just dont have to money to be going and buying alot of chemicals and stuff right now for something like this. Maybe after this grow I will but I dont want to be spending alot right now. This weed is just to roll up in a blunt every now and then when I dont want to buy some dank to smoke in a peice, ya know? If I do mix half and half with the Scotts and plain topsoil, will I HAVE to add nutes to expect any yield at all?
BTW +rep for the help sampson

you should probably be ok making it through one grow if you do a 50/50 mix.... there should be plenty in there to make it through one harvest.. im just afraid that if you dont "thin it out" then you wont get a harvest at all... especially seedlings and early in veg growth... plants cant handle the amount of nutes the soil will release... i really really would recommend mixing it with potting soil.. you can get enough to mix with what you have for 10 to 20 bucks i bet.. and in the end it will pay off... i feel ya one wanting to minimize cost, but it doesnt matter how much you do or dont spend if you do it if you dont have anything to show for it in the end.... thanks for the +rep also

Thanks man you have really been alot of help....I am definitely going to pick up some plain ole topsoil tomorrow and mix it in before I put my seeds in. If you are interested, I plan on having a grow journal started up in the next few days, so feel free to watch my plants grow (and hopefully not become a failure ha)
