Default Total noob looking for start-up tips, Aerogarden perhaps?
Hi there, long time smoker, first time grower here. I've been thinking about growing my own for ages, and have decided to bite the bullet.

I've seen the Aerogarden (http://www.aerogarden.org.uk/aerogarden_concept.html) on TV, and had a read through the threads on it, it looks pretty good, and think it might be the way to go for me. I was hoping to get some advice from you guys on here though. I'm a student, so keeping costs down is imperative, and I was wondering if there was a more cash efficient method I could use. I have zero growing experience, so the Aerogarden appeals for ease of use, but I'm wondering if I can get the kind of yields I'd like off it.

Is it possible for around £100-150 to yield about 1.5oz a month average? So each harvest I'll be looking to get around 3.5-4oz, it's for personal use, I don't want to go mental with it. Is aerogarden suitable for this?

Another option I was looking at was getting an Ikon Oxy Pot (http://www.grotec.co.uk/search.php?s...arch_submit=Go) with a HPS light, I can get one with a 600w light+reflector for £95 online, about the same as an aerogarden, but the root capacity is over four times larger, and I'm sure the light is better. Is a MH light strictly necessary? Will it increase my yield hugely? I do need to keep costs low.

If I go this way I'll have to find a way to hang the lights (I'm planning on growing in a canvas wardrobe lined with tinfoil and possibly some sort of soundproofing if the oxy pot is loud) and get a timer and all that. Any reccomendations?

As for varieties, I was thinking of going for either AK-48 or some Lowryder 2 (Lowryder 2 if I get the aerogarden, to ensure the plant fits under the hood). Are these good for my purposes?

One other problem is nutes, I see that foxfarm are really heavily reccomended on here, is there a decent UK supplier anyone knows of, I've had a google, can't find one. If not, can someone reccomend an alternative that is available in the UK?

Sorry for all the questions, I've been reading a lot of this site, trying to get ideas, if I've asked anything too obvious and stupid, I apologise. Cheers for the help guys.

your first grow maybe stick to the old light and soil trick it works better if your new its way easier. try and get a large cfl and an hps start with the cfl untill flowering and then use the hps bigger yeilds with hps during flowering

Honestly for the kind of yields your looking for, its not just an aero garden kinda thing... Your looking at probablly a 4x4 area with at least a 250 w hps setup. I would read up alot more on growing because you need to understand all the things the plant needs to do to produce good bud.
How to grow:

Are you aware of odor issues, what type of area are you tring to set this up in? Do you have a dedicated closet or room dedicated to this? Are you growing outside? If so what the specifics on the environment...

Check out those threads, answer tose questions and we may be able to better help you out.

And no, on that budget you would have a very difficult time getting that type of return.

Tons of good nutes out there. Foxfarm is popular here in the US but so is alot of other stuff...

I think you should consider a rubbermaid DWC grow for your first start. Very fast growth, fairly easy for a noob, and tons of info on it here. Then you can tell people its hydro or "dro" LOL

is you have 175 US dollars you could build a 6 pot DWC system for about 30 us dollars. Get 4 t-5 bulbs to get started and your seeds. You might seed 1.5 OZ a month but i used HPS and alot of it so I do not have personal exp there. I do used the t-5's to veg and they rock....

Cheers for the swift replies guys.

I'm growing indoors, the UK isn;t quite temperate for outdoor grows! Odour isn't an issue really, my room stinks of weed anyway! I've got a dedicated closet I plan on growing in.

I'm pretty set on hydro/aero, I don't mind the steep learning curve and the results speak for themselves.

Olosto, thanks for the input, $175 dollars would be fine, anything up to about $250 I can stretch too (just!). I'll definitly look into the rubbermaid idea, sounds good. I'm also considering bubbleponics if I can get a system shipped to the UK, they look like the shizzle, self-contained too. The budget isn't set in stone, if it's going to cost more, it'll cost more. I'd like to keep it cheap, but the idea is that I grow enough to not have to pay for weed, so however much I spend, I'll be saving on buying shite from dodgy blokes on street corners!

Reddragon, cheers for that, most useful.

Full time UK smoker here, trying to get myself into the growing world also, for the same reasons as you.

Let me know how you do. Im also thinking of what methods to use and came across the canvas wardrobe idea, seems cheap and shouldnt be much trouble converting it into the perfect grow space.

If your using a canvas wardrobe i might have to steal a few tips from ya

Good luck dude,
Peace!
