Yes you need the ec ppm meter. I didnt know i had a crap load of minerals tds in my water and over fed my plants. you may be starting with 4-500 ppm before adding nutes and if you dont account for them you will over feed your plants or even lock out your nutes.

Noone even asked if you are growing in soil or hydro. If you're growing hydro, then yes, you should really get a TDS/PPM/EC meter. If growing in soil, i'm of the thought that you don't need one.

It is essentially the same thing.
EC=Electrical Conductivity
PPM= Part per million, calculated either by ECx500, ECx640, ECx700 depending on the brand of meter you buy
TDS=total dissolved solids, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Total_dissolved_solids

You really only need to measure one of these, i prefer EC because it is a universal rate and doesnt fluctuate based on brand of meter.

thanks so i take it you can calculate the tds from the other readings.

the stick measures ppm, ec & cf

specs:
Waterproof
Range: 4 - 52 CF 280 - 3640 ppm (EC x 700); 0.4 - 5.2EC 200-3000ppm(ECx500)
Resolution: 0.1 EC(1 CF); 70ppm 700; 50ppm 500
Accuracy: ±4% of reading
Temperature Compensation: Automatic
  • Operating Temperature: 0 - 50?(32 - 122?F)
  • Calibration: Factory Calibrated
  • Power Source: 3×1.5V Alkaline Batteries (Included)
  • Auto Sense: Auto On and Auto Off

will this and my ph meter be fine? is there anythink else i need? thanks
