Most definately monitor the ph of your water. That is step #1.
I like to use super thrive and fox farm nutes (grow big, big bloom, tiger bloom.) If growing in soil you may not need any nutes for the first couple weeks. When you begin adding nutes you will want a ppm/tds pen. That will allow you to see how strong your mix is.
And yes, the smell will be pretty strong. Not at first, but after a month or two into flowering the smell will be very noticeable.

A ppm/tds pen measures the parts per million/total disolved salts in your water. Basically, it tells you how much stuff is in your water. You will want to use a ppm/tds pen to help maintain consistent nutrient concentrations. It is not manditory that you get one, but I do strongly recommend getting one when using nutrients. Mine was about $20 U.S.D.

I would look for a local hydroponics store. Even if you have to drive somewhere, its totally worth it. They will have everything you will need.
Home depot and Ace Hardware do not have ppm pens. They do have pool ph test kits and test strips, but the ph range isnt very wide on those.
You can also go on the internet, STAY AWAY FROM HID HUT! I ordered from them and waited two weeks for my light. After waiting and not receiving anything, I called and they said they sold out of that light, but never notified me or shipped a different light. Justin said he would send me a different light immediately. Well 5 days later that bastard finally shipped it. It was almost three weeks after I ordered my light before anything was shipped. They promise fast shipping but dont deliver.
