Default Wht CFM fan do you have cooling your air coolable reflector??
Just like the title says. I've got a 400w MH/HPS lamp in a SupaNova air-coolable reflector w/ glass bottom. It has a 4" flange on one side of it which I will be running a air duct from the reflector to outside the closet, with an inline fan somewhere in between. Right now I have a 44CFM fan exhausting the hood, but temp's in the closet still reach 88-89*F when ambient temp's outside the closet are around 76*F. I read all these threads where people say their 400w's are 6" above their plants and the glass in their air-coolable hood is cool to the touch - well, mine sure isn't.

Do I just need to get a larger inline fan to exhaust the hood, or what?

Some reflectors are open air (i.e. do no have a glass bottom, with the light enclosed in the reflector housing), some are air cooled (the opposite of what I just described). Air coolable reflectors allow you to hook ducting and inline fans up to the reflector and cool the hot air coming from the light.

Here's the reflector I have:

On the right side of it where the vents are, I have a 4" flange attached so that I can hook ducting up to it. Here is another example:

Any input guys? I'd really like to know what people are using in order to get the glass "cool to the touch". My fan venting air from the reflector is a 44CFM fan, which works OK, but does not do what some people describe. You can still feel alot of heat below the glass and theres no way I think I could get my plants under a foot away from it.

if you really want to cool it, go to home depot or something and pick up a muffin fan that'll move 125cfm... that should get enough are moving through there to cool it down enough...

Systemair RVK 100, about 110/120 cfm, 4 inch, 100 mm, should do the shop nicely. 60 quid from Growell, or you can get some much cheaper 100cfm inline fans which would do the job just as well for about a tenner.

You need more 'suck' or 'push' than a 44cfm fan though.

So about 100cfm will be enough to make the glass relatively cool and allow me to have the plants within 1 foot of the glass?

I would have said so yes. The RVK they recommend for the Jetstream air cooled reflector is the RVK125, which is a 5 inch fan pulling about 150cfm. The RVK 100 is a 4" fan pulling 103cfm, the other one is a 4" fan pulling 100 cfm. If you went with the RVK 125 you'd have to add a 5 inch to 4 inch reducer on the fan end to connect to the reflector.

Whether 100cfm will cool the reflector enough depends entirely on the ambient temperatire and effectiveness of existing ventilation. 100cfm will certainly do a better job than 44cfm! But whether you need the 150cfm bigger RVK is hard to say. Ideally yes, but you may get away with a cheaper alternative.
