At 7 weeks indoors and just found the first preflowers. I've been running the lights at 18/6 and holding back on the 12/12 to make sure the clones have taken.

I thought that she wouldn't get preflowers until I was into 12/12 light. So I changed to 12/12 last night as it seemed pointless leaving her on 18/6 if she has already started to flower. Am I doing the right thing here?

sure...u can always hold it and make it veg long but she's ready y wait just longer till you get to smoke hehe

Preflowers, as opposed to full blown flowers, generally appear after the fourth week of vegetative growth.

So in conclusion my first grow is now into day 8 of flowering and today seeing the start of actual flowers around the top nodes.
