Default chunked sponge for grow medium?

i am making a 5 gal bucket aero and was wondering if i could use sponge from the dollar store chunked up with scissors as a grow medium? or atleast from seedlings?

I have many buckets and lots of time. my brother wants to grow tomatoes as well.... not sure if that makes a diff nevertheless thought i would throw it out there...
