Advantages of Flushing?

Not everyone flushes. Folks who use lots of ferts and/or cheap ferts often flush to wash away as much residual crap as they can. It's generally done at the very end of the grow, just before harvest. Sometimes one flushes during a grow to try and correct imbalances, or repair over-fert damage.
I believe the idea is to wash at least 3 x's as much water thru the planter and soil as the planters empty size.
You can flush with molasses. There are commercial flushes. Waters fine.
I don't flush.

Reportedly improves flavor and burn.

Flushing will improve the taste and burn of an overnuted plant. I flush for 1 week before i flower, then flush the last 2 weeks of flower. so I flush 2 times each grow, 3 weeks total. Shit works too, there is a big difference in my flushed and unflushed weed. the unflushed burns black, pops and fizzles out, tastes metallic and smells a bit like piss. the flushed burns clean and turns the ash white, smells like pine and citrus, stays lit for as long as I toke.

Didn't even notice 1st question. In addition to the "reaching for water" thing, it keeps wet pockets out of the bottom of the planter, where your roots hate excess moisture.

Also, you wouldn't know the entire planters soil had been watered if no water came out the bottom.
