You can squeeze the stem and bend it over without it breaking. You can also give the plant less nitrogen so it doesnt shoot straight up. Keeping the lights close helps a lot too. Under low light conditions the plant wants to stretch towards the light.

Is there a time in the plants life to tie them down? I have read that if you tie the top to the bottem of stem or near, you cause the plant to grown shorter, but when should this be done? 12"? or just wen you can?
If you are a newbie... DON'T try to train your plants by bending and twisting your little baby cause it might die... Just flower it early (around 10-12 inches tall) and she will stay short and have buds... keep the lights close and feed them enough(not too much).
