Anybody else going to see the Zappa plays Zappa tour this summer ?
Since Dweezils inception of this band playing all Frank Zappa's music its became a yearly event for me & my family, every yerar he has a guest performer from The Mothers of Invention or the Zappa band,we've seen Steve Vai,Terry Bozzio & Ray white as guests so far. As long as rap music is not the main stay of your musical tastes i highly reccomend this show, lots of killer hard core fusion jazz, complicated rock, extremely difficult modern classical peices & of course the old school hippie songs like "Dont eat the yellow snow" & Montana. These guys are insanely skilled musicians who are multi talented & put on one fuk of a show,no 2 turntables & a microphone stuff going on ,just serious musicianship. The 60's & 70's were an amazing time for rock music & fusion jazz with FZ putting out some of the greatest & most complicated music of all the heavy bands of the era. Check out a clip from last years show. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cxoNPg6cv04 I couldnt find a clip of this song by the Zappa plays Zappa band so i got this clip of Frank playing with one of the most talented group of musicains he had since having George Duke & Jean Luc-Ponty in the band, bonus question, who's the guy playing rythm guitar in this clip,he went on to be in one of the most famous bands of the 70's. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3JXVxMM9IQg Here's the tour date schedule. My favorite Zappa Lineup:
Tom & Bruce Fowler Ruth & Ian Underwood Sal Marquez George Duke Jean-Luc Ponty Ralph Humphrey Looks like I'm driving up to Ottawa in July. I have never seen Frank Zappas' music performed live (other than in conert videos), but I have a bunch of Zappa Lps (Apostrophe', Overnight Sensation, Joes' Garage, Sheik Yourbouti, and Shut up and Play your Guitar, 70s era pretty much) and I have over sixty Zappa albums on my iPod. I think it is safe to say that the music of Frank Zappa is the antithesis of all modern music: Big bands, creative melodies, a sense of humour, and MUSICIANSHIP! All of these are sorely lacking in new rock, which is now streamlined corporate pop with whiny gender indifferent vocals to accompany the palm-muted noodling guitar riffs. Panhead if you haven't already, check out the 8-LP set You Can't Do That on Stage Anymore. Some of the best live Zappa I've ever heard. I was always curious as to when Dweezil was coming to Canada. Rep + for the tour schedule. |

This was the line up of serious talent, the score to this stuff looks like a road map. Part 1. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d3ZNG...eature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RyeVk...eature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7O9n...eature=related I got lucky & picked up the entire You cant do that on stage anymore box set, complete with the collectable rhodie storage case,i even had a brief discussion with Scott Thunes (Bass player on that series) about some of the crazy chops he played on them,Scott was an amazingly nice man. I was lucky enough to see FZ live several times, the shit was out of sight but i enjoy the way Dweezil leads that band & the direction he's taken the music more that the way Frank presented most of the music, with Dweezil there is none of the disruptiveness that Frank was famous for,i think Dweezils simplifying the music presents it in an easier form for new listeners to follow, some of the stuff that Frank presented live was so complicated if you couldnt read music it was out of your league,Dweezil does much of the hard stuff but with less emphasis on the songs with dramaticly imposed rythms over time. If at all possible go see the show,Dweezils done a fantastic job presenting the music & assembled a band capable of playing anything on the planet. Intro to "The torture never stops".
