400w hps/mh good or over kill?

400W MH is an excellent choice for a closet that size. It will produce a nice harvest without much fussing. I grow in the same size closet with a 600WHPS. But like everyone else says, you will need to exhaust the heat or leave the door open and yes there will be odor to deal with. You could...

1st Grow! 2x Afghan Kush Ryder & 1x Blue Himalaya Auto 290w CFL

I don't know the nutes you are using. Since you have smallish pots and your plants have had a dehydration problem, I would go very gently with the nutes. Start with 1/4 or even 1/8 the recommended dose and ramp up slowly every other watering. Watch for leaf curling and tips turning brown...

1st Grow! 2x Afghan Kush Ryder & 1x Blue Himalaya Auto 290w CFL

@Sean: Pay it no mind. It's common practice for people to post pix of their grows in other grow threads where the plants are similar. It can be useful to have something else to compare to. Of course if it comes to dominate the thread that's not right but it's hardly the case here. Auto...

1st Grow! 2x Afghan Kush Ryder & 1x Blue Himalaya Auto 290w CFL

It does sound like they are about to get going. 15" high is nice, but how bushy. A short plant can still be big and need a big root system. After harvest I like to pull the plant and look at the roots carefully. If parts of your soil have gotten very dry they may become water repellent and...

1st Grow! 2x Afghan Kush Ryder & 1x Blue Himalaya Auto 290w CFL

That's great. A simple fix. Don't get overzealous and start overwatering which is much more difficult to fix. Smell is good but it just means the plant is happy. Some strains are more smelly than others and some start giving off an odor sooner. It's been three weeks. It's time to check for...

    has anyone ever tried this?

That's pretty clever, a nice setup with little work. I guess you guys dont have much use for the shower? :) I've been wanting to make some beer can reflectors myself but I hardly ever drink beer so I am going to have to go dumpster diving.

Hey seal. Sorry I haven't been around. Things have been disrupted here. Your girls are moving along and looking pretty good apart from the leaf curling issue. The BH seems to be suffering the worst. Different strains will react differently to stress. 29c is the upper end of the...

dark period 1 degree over light period

Don't worry about it. The whole night/day temps bindiss is about eking out a small improvement in plants that are otherwise doing great. RIU has a lot of these threads arguing about things that don't make a lot of difference. As a rule of thumb, if it makes a big difference, then it's...

    LST?? but why??

If you want to control the height of your plant, you can use LST together with topping, but LST is more general than that. It's a method for shaping the plant and is mostly done to ensure the plant gets as much light as possible.

    DIY Lighting Electronics Questions.

What WattSaver said. The ballast for an HID light is both a transformer and inductor. As a transformer it ramps up the house voltage to about 400V depending on the bulb. A PC power supply produces 12v & 5v. Most likely it's a switching unit which means the transformer is an itty bitty thing...

    LST?? but why??

If you give the plant everything else she needs when she needs it, then your yield will depend directly on the amount of light she gets. Once you've bought as many watts as you can afford, the next improvement will be in the way the plant's canopy is arranged under that light. LST is a...

IMO he cut too much off the reflectors, they should have wings at 45 deg to cat the light coming off the sides. Other than that, looks very practical.

    Bat Guano

Bat guano is a nutrient but it's composition varies. Some are very high in nitrogen, some high in phosphorous. In any case you have to be careful how you feed it to your plants as it's very 'hot' and can burn the roots.

Yes, you can use any switch rated for 120V and more than 2A. BTW if you like to fool around with electronics, an old PC pwr supply can be a good workbench supply.

    DIY Lighting Electronics Questions.

I've never wired up a 70W HPS ballast, but the one I have does have an ignitor. With a magnetic ballast, the ballast and transformer are the same thing. Digital ballasts are comparatively new. I have no experience with them. This is what I am used to
