Could you clarify for me what cropping does exactly, i know it makes the plant grow more heads, but doesnt topping do the same thing?

Hi I was wondering if anyone could help me out with a few questions on cropping and topping. 1. Does cropping slow the growth of the plant? 2. Are you able to top the plant, then crop? or vise-versa. 3. Which is more beneficial in the long run? Any help would be much appreciated thanks.
