best way is to get an identical fan to match intake, and use a fan controller and put it on the intake fan at slightly less power than full. That way your exhaust will create a slight vacuum in the room and exhaust properly.

All that's for is to increase the surface area of the cut. More surface area for roots to start from = better chance of roots starting. Just try and cut it off at an angle is all, don't cut it straight across.
