That's the same set-up I have. It's basically hydro with a soil medium.

pH is the most important factor in nutrient availability. If the pH is wrong, it will throw everything else off. pH for soil - 6.5 to 7 pH for hydro - 5.5 to 6.5

start them under CFLs, they cost less to run, don't put out as much heat, have a better spectrum for vegging than HPS. Overall much better for a small seedling imo.
