You should always match your ballast to your bulb wattage. You can under drive a 600 watt bulb with a 400 watt ballast, but it'll give a really bad spectrum and less light per watt. If you can work the plugs out, you can run a smaller bulb in a hood. If it was designed for a 600 I wouldn't...

I've done it once. After they were solidly flowering I switched to 12/36 and they kept flowering. A lot went wrong on that grow, so I can't say if there is any benefit... Seems to make things mature slower, but I had pretty bad root rot going on too. Some strains might be more accepting of that...

Also, I guess I should update my level of fail. Hit a glitch in my programming and haven't figured it out yet. These samples are getting a normal cure. I've given up on these as a test but will try again come real harvest time in a few weeks

Yes, that only makes sense to do if your filter is rated for 3X - 5X more air than you are actually using it for. The big ones work out to be more economical and work better.

I've never heard someone say they regret buying a filter that was too big. The only problem (other than size) is that the filter near the outlet may get "used up" first. In that situation you can rap that half in cling rap or packing tape and then it's like a new filter.

Good idea, if that can work it would give awesome results. On the 19" dimension it might be too tight. Hopefully someone who knows more about CMH's than I can say if 7 1/2" from the bulb would be too close. If it is you could leave a ~8" vertical gap on both sides where it would be too bright...
