  • A 400 might be fine. Get a dimmable ballast so it can be dialed back if needed. I use 2 400 watt hps that have a built in dimmer. Mine are at 100% because I didnt see any signs of light stress. You plants will tell you what they need. You have to learn how to read them. I originally started from seed using 23 watt CFLs and I had lanky spindly plants. I upgraded to 54w HO fluorescent tubes and the plants loved it. Proper height, beefy stalks and larger leaves. I tried to flower with the same light and had great quality smoke, however the buds were light and airy, not dense like they should have been. I upgraded to 2x 400 watt hps and have had great success.
I would also encourage you to vent your room so your plants can breathe. An enclosed room is unhealthy will promote mold growth. My setup has an exhaust fan cycling on and off to keep temp and humidity down. Mine is a basement grow and I framed in the room and sealed it airtight with a high gloss white sealing paint so I can filter the air going in. I use a small Hepa furnace filter to trap any mold spores, dust, and pollen from entering my room. I exhaust with a 250 cfm fan into a dryer vent. In a basement grow try to keep your pots (or buckets) off of the floor, cold roots grow slow.
Nellyberner, One key factor on making small wattage lamps more effective is to have proper reflecting of the lamp. My first grow was under 100% fluorescent lamps and results were not bad. I used a cheap light meter to aim and bend polished aluminum reflectors to make good use of what would otherwise be stray light. Keep rotating the plants to encourage even growth. In my opinion your best bet would be to buy another 250 watt lamp for multiple light sources. Two 250 watt lamps cover more square feet evenly than one 600 watt lamp with if you have an 8 foot ceiling considering you have only 5 plants. As you expand, add more lights to keep coverage even, and consider higher wattage then.
