Contrary to what others may say a dark period even if only 4 hours is more beneficial to plants then 24 hour light. Plants use the dark period to generate new growth and build a strong root system. In your second pic the tips look burned and curled from possible nutrient burn. Maybe someone else...

If you are growing in soil you should always have drainage holes to remove excess water. Excess water left undrained can cause root rot and lots of other bad things.
