I've never tried that, in nature the seeds would go through a cold cycle (except in the tropics) so I feel the fridge is a good substitute. A fridge has pretty low humidity so it would tend to dry out the seeds a little so a dessicant wouldn't be necessary except for long term storage. If you've got lots of seeds split them up and see which gives you better resuts.
