If the location isn't too far for you to access I would suggest using water from home instead, though it's up to you.

First of all how is the quality of the water? Does the soil dry often? Or is it always damp? If it's always damp then that is too close to the water.

Though it's quite cold where you are now I've heard it gets fairly hot in summer and coverage from trees may come in handy depending on what you plan on growing. I would go for a hybrid strain as to somewhat prevent from early frost in September/October but strong enough to with stand the heat...

1. Is your dog Mac planting in a secure location? 2. What are the temps/soil like where you are from? 3. The plant shouldn't really smell pre-flowering depending on how long you veg it for.
