The arrangement between a caregiver and patient varies. In some cases you can get a certain quanity of free meds when you assign your caregiver. Other times you get a discounted price. Generally speaking a caregiver is well compensated for there efforts.

In our case(my husband and myself) we made each other caregivers. This allows us to grow 6 plants in veg and 6 in flower (3 each per patient). We can still go to a dispensary and get meds if we need to between growing cycles or to try a new strain. Generally you will pay more if the dispensary is not your caregiver and you really need to check around to find a place you like.

Also remember you can change your caregiver but you must file that with the state as well.I also believe it is the patients responsibility to notify an exisiting caregiver that your are changing.
