Default Questions for experienced providers
I am currently in the healthcare industry, and I am considering the possibility of expanding my expertise to include medical marijuana. I am in the very beginning stages of planning for this, however I am extremely serious about providing a high quality service at a fair price.

Before I go further, allow me to explain a few things regarding my personal views on profit in healthcare. I currently run a for profit health care practice. I do believe that quality healthcare is a basic human right, and it a karmic responsibility to ease another persons suffering when possible. Because my practice is for profit, I offer premium healthcare services that your local community based system is unable to maintain. I also provide services at a sliding fee for those unable to meet cost. Because I budget for these reduced fees, I have found this actually increases my bottom line. Overall, I take a client first mentality, and I never forget that their problems do not go away when they leave my office. I am very familiar with the business of healthcare, and I would like to apply that experience to the medical application of marijuana.

A good friend of mine has his Ph.D. in chemistry, and is very interested in becoming a business partner. As we are both scientifically trained, we are excited to run some BADLY needed research to further the field. I will flatly admit that I am interested in running a people first practice that provides a nice return on my initial investment. Furthermore, we are interested in setting up shop in Colorado simply because it is one of the most beautiful places on earth. Is it even possible to run a for profit dispensary in Colorado, or must they all be listed as not for profit? I am not very concerned with the federally illegal issue, just as long as I don’t have to worry about spending 40 years in jail. I am only interested in following state law to the letter. Any other general accounts of the business would be appreciated.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Only a few of the close to 30 dispensaries are listed as non-profit. Most are LLC. You should talk to an Attorney about your plans. Both these Attorney's are good people and advise numerous dispensaries throughout the State of Colorado.

Thanks for the feedback, I have a TON of research to do including meetings with lawyers. Obviously this is a legal fuzzy area, but I need to follow state law in order to be successful.

There are a ton of things to look at. i am in the same process as you. Getting a lawyer is a good idea, however remember that alot of the frontend work has already been done by Lawyers. There is no point in re-inventing the wheel, and most Lawyers will let you pay them to do things that are already established. the other concerns in Colorado are the local municipalities laws. Some cities have laws that say you must follow all federal Laws, therefore you can't do a dispensary in their jurisdiction.
Best of luck, and if you need anything hit me in a PM

My wife, buisness partner, and I are in love with the state of Colorado. However, I am not 100% sold on any location as of yet. We have even tossed around the idea of setting up shop in a more progressive country (ie Canada).

I am aware that California is more forward looking that Colorado, but I REALLY want to live in the Rocky Mountains if I can help it Reguardless, we will not be ready to do this for another 2 years, and alot of legal stuff can happen in that time frame.

On a side note, I use marijuana to help control mild Epilepsy. Fortunately, I have a great neurologist so I have outstanding control. marijuana takes the seizures from 1X a month to completely seizure free. When I run out, I usually have a small seizure about a month later. Therefore I want to be able to conduct research in whatever state I set up shop. That is more of a state ethic board issue that I need to research on my own.

That's impossible... marijuana is a schedule 1 drug. That means that it is defined as highly addictive with absolutely no medical value. Just ask our government, they will tell you. Crack is much safer.. it's schedule 2.

They are so sure about that, that they won't even allow anybody to study it.
