There seem to be no studies on this subject excluding the extremely biased studies done in the UK that have little scientific weight.

I was wondering people's personal experiences do you have bi-polar and use marijuana or do you know someone who does?

Does it help, do nothing, or aggravate mania?
How does it interact with prescibed medications?

There really isnt much out there and i have looked. I know many many times bi polar disorder is mis diagnosed as schitzophrenia and vise versa. I am pretty possitive mania would not result in either case from smoking a heavy indica. I dont know what meds you are on but i would experiment with a heavy indica to put your mind at ease. but my sister has schitzophrenia and was previously diagnosed as bipolar. she has always done fine with weed no problem and i would bet money you will be fine marijuana almost never affects other drugs. the cannabinoids in cannabis mimic the endocannabinoids in your body your body doesnt know the difference. If you want a doctors opinion i would go to a specialist. family doctors dont know shit about shit when you really get into the logistics of certain diseases.

Thanks, it's not for me. I believe she is on Abilify, Lamital, and Seroquel there are more I think too.

Your friend should be fine just sit with her and tell her to take a hit only one and see how she likes it. Like i said pot comes in a vast array of different highs some put you in a psychadelic state and get your mind working in overdrive similar to tripping. these types i would not advise in using because people with bipolar disorder are not supposed to consume psychadelics due to this phenomenon. It litterally makes there brains work so fast it can drive them crazy. That is the only thing wrong that could happen. Chemically her body will not suffer at all. Mentally she should be absolutely fine unless the shit yall are smoking is like purple haze or something that brings on a psychadelic tripping high.

Good friend of mine is bipolar, smokes regularly. I think that weed eases him in mania stage.. He takes prescriptions daily, so it all mixes...

He's 25, diagnosed a few years ago. The symptoms that they call bipolar have always been there though.

He tried smoking ganj a few times over several years through high school with me and friends as I was the grade below him. Hated it every time. This from a kid that would drink like a fish and suck down ciggs. I know he'll never touch herb again.


People that have or are predisposed to mental disorders generally should not touch recreational drugs of any kind.

I have a bipolar cousin who used to smoke pot. It did seem to make her more tolerable.

An elder in the family expressed their disapproval of it, howevr, and she stopped smoking. She then resumed her million-various-happy-pills-a-day habit, and now we all wish she would start smoking again and throw the pills away. Including the formerly disapproving elder.

She is the only bipolar person I know that smoked, though. The title of this thread made me think of the rabbit lady in 'Diary of a Mad Black Woman'...lol! She was a trip.
