it is never a good idea to transplant plants from outside. the best way to do it is start inside. plants outside tend to be frail/stretched when they're young and growing naturally. if you bring them in and stick them in a pot with lots of nutrients it might shock them. like you described, the bottom leaves will turn yellow and die. the best thing to do is trim the dead leaves and let it grow.. you will have a long slender stem towards the bottom so you might want to use a stick and some ties.
