Possible Root Rot? need help

setup: 2 afghan rhyder, 2 auto-ak grown in 1.5" netpots in a small dwc setup. ph is usually between 5.8-6.8. adding light grow nutes once every 5 days. they're currently on day 18 from

browning on the roots has appeared twice, both times were the morning after I added nutrients. daily treatments h202 has helped bring them back to white, but it seems to keep coming back. also, I've added hygrozyme each time I replace the water in the res. Can anyone tell me if this is root rot, or if not what it is and if I should worry about it? Notice the browning on the edges of the leaves.

What nutes? Some will turn them kind of brown but it is nothing to worry about. If they are slimy and stink then you got the rot

^^ that's the key - if they are slimey and smell funky you have root rot. Check your res temps, what size bucket, how big is the airstone?

i haven't wanted to physically touch the roots so I'm not sure about the slime. but the browning of the roots has been present for 6 days now and I haven't smelled anything noticeable from the water. I don't have a temp probe or thermometer so I can't check the temperature, but I've been adding a large chunk of ice everyone few days to keep it from getting too high. as far as what type of nutes, I'm not actually sure what type they are. I ordered the growbox and it came with unlabelled grow and flower nutes, and since this is supposed to be as low-budget as possible, I figured I'd just use those. I know I'm not being very helpful but that's all the info I can give you guys. Thanks for the help

Touch them, they won't bite you! I am with checking the res temp too. I would shoot for 68-72 and never over 75.
Edit: you are adding ice? This will fuck with ppm and ph big time. Freeze some water bottles to keep it cool. The bigger the longer they last

Stick with just the h2o2. If you do indeed already have a slime issue the Hygrozyme could actually make things worse. Dont get me wrong its good stuff when used in a clean system. But can cause a slimey outbreak if added to an already affected res. Dont know exactly why but it does......

Alright so I'll cut off any more hygrozyme until the problems figured out. And I'll try adding frozen bottles, but the problem is my dwc is all about micro, its a 2ft tall box and my res is only 1gal (I'm probably gunna get a 2.5gal to switch to for flowering). so it's tough to fit much extra stuff in there haha. The airstone is 8".

Also, is there a limit to how much h202 you can use before it's unhealthy for the plant? I've used 2.5-5ml per gal, once a day

What percentage h202 do you have?

the regular stuff found at cvs, 3% i believe

3% wont do much of anything. I would get some 29% or 50% food grade. I recommend the 29%.

And rubber gloves and eye protection when using it.....

I've heard about stabilizers to increase shelf life but most people who use 29 or 35% H202 dilute it before adding to the res anyway. By buying h202 you are now on a path of sterilization, continue using for the rest of the grow, every 2-3days use the same amount (i've used up to 4ml/gal of 29% =40ml/gal of 3%) and have had no problems. If your roots dont smell like shit your doing fine, GH micro browns my roots a little but no slime

oh wow i didn't realize I could use that much. I'll bump it up to 10-15ml per gal

If you read about Heisenberg's dwc tea in his thread it may be an easier choice then constant sterilization. It packs the bucket with good bacteria to eat the rotting organic material before the bad ones get a chance to grab hold. Bomb IMO

its depressing watching a full dollar bottle go into the res every few days, so much wasted plastic!!!

Shame I dont have a way to ship you some of my Springtails, they do a great job of keeping my soil grows policed up. Plus they are fun to watch 'spring' about!

would they survive in a hydro growbox?

I am pretty certain they survive hydro systems. Most folks do not realize they are a beneficial insect and kill them thinking they are harming their plants...They are tiny but tough....
