Strange gel on bottom of my cutting in EZ-cloner.... any help??

I took these clones off a mother and put them in a ex cloner 60 spot aeroponic cloner on June 1st 2011 and they havent rooted and a couple of them look lifeless and one has gel on it. any idea what would do this? i didnt use any clonex solution in the water but i dipped them in the clonex gel after cutting the angle. i left the cuttings in the clonex gel for a minute or two should i not do that? quick dip and put int he machine or soak them so they absorb? heard both ways works. any ideas what would be doing this?? note there are other older rooted clones doing just fine in the cloner right next to these guys. very confused on all this. could it be a bad mother?? pictures attached below
