Default experiencing low yields, help!
Hey, feeling a bit noobish, but I'm having problems getting my ak47 up to par. The last run I did was with 16 plants, grown to about three feet in height before placing in bloom, using 2 1000w HPS lights that are air-cooled so they stay close to the plants, with co2 supplementation.

I grew the plants in 7 gal containers using fox farm ocean forrest soil. I watered them using distilled water. I used GH nutes, and a few others like purplemaxx and gravity. And yet I could only get about 19-22g per plant??

I noticed the fan leaves started yellowing very early through bloom, maybe three weeks out, and by the time they were ready to harvest most of the leaves had already yellowed and dropped.

The current batch in bloom was experiencing the same thing with the leaves yellowing too much and too soon (it seemed), so about four weeks through bloom I tried to rule out too little light and added 2 more 1000w HPSs (albeit I'm running about twice the number of plants which are shorter than last time) and I added an 8" inline fan to bring in more fresh air (even though I'm already supplementing with co2 from a tank).

The room is aproximately 350 sq ft although I've got the 4000 watts of lights concentrated to a 45 sq ft area in the center. I'm not using anything for reflecting and downsizing/compacting the actual grow area, I understand it would help but I feel like that shouldn't solely account for getting less than an oz per plant.

For the current batch in bloom, which is almost ready, I have been feeding weekly using GH 3 part plus floralicious bloom, floral sweetener, superthrive, hygrozyme, protekt and diamond nectar (for the first few weeks of bloom).

The soil is pH balanced to about 6.5, I tested the soil and run off and the pH is fine.... I just don't get it! Any ideas? Thanks

you should be getting a much larger yield..uhh. i had problems with Mg and Cal what about temps? i don't think you need that big of containers really...how big are they when they're done? 6 ft? temps? sounds like you've got a good setup i don't know what's wrong but my plants were a little over nuted in NPK and didn't have enough Mg and Cal and i had yellowing leaves really into flower too...hope you get your problems fixed gl

I'm not sure about the Mg or Cal, I had a Mg deficiency a batch or two back, but I believe I effectively fixed that problem. I noticed a zinc deficiency in veg but I think that was because of the high Calcium rate in the tap water, so I switched to distilled water and put some zinc-plated screws in the soil and that fixed the problem.

Thanks for the reply. The temps are typically fine, between 70 and 85 throughout the day cycle and no lower than 65 during the night.

One thing that is curious about this strain of AK47 (which I got clones from a friend) is that it is almost utterly and completely without any smell. I'm not even using a carbon filter or anything to mask a smell because it does not exist. The only way I can get a smell is if I pinch the flowers.

The current containers for this batch are the square 4 gallon food buckets, drilled at the bottom for drainage.

The last batch was about 5 ft when they were done, this current batch I tried to get the AKs bushier so they are only about 18"-24" which was about what they were when I put them in bloom.

Sounds like a big area for only 4 lamps,45 foot?
Is the 45 foot section area enclosed and reflective?
Ak47 only yields about 350 per sqmetre if your lucky in ideal conditions, but it sounds likely that you have nt enclosed your space and your losing all of your light.
Also how have you provided oxygen to the roots?
Another point imo is that overwtaering creates lighter buds that weigh very little as the plant will produce less resin when its always wet

thanks for the reply... yeah I know, it should be stinkin'. The friend I got it from commented the same thing when he was growing it, and he had no problem getting yields out of it.

I'm definitely not overwatering it, if anything I don't think I'm watering/feeding them enough.

I'm not overtly providing oxygen to the roots other than making sure I'm not overwatering, but it's possible the soil is too compact. I thought about adding some h2o2 to the waterings, not sure how much that would help.

And no, the section is not enclosed nor reflected... I have some panda film and I could erect something, but it seems like 4000 watts should be drowning them with light with or without reflective material and an enclosed area. Maybe I'm just wrong, though.

Light escapes make sure that you trap or your yields will be low.
Always provide plenty of oxygen to the roots in any way that you can.
I created an airbasket design for this purpose anyone can build and use it and i don't sell them and they are very cheap to create and will increase your yield a lot.
Parts can be bought easily anywhere in the world.
I would say that probably your main problem is that your area is not enclosed and you have a terrible light leak problem.
Best of luck

word booty, thanks for the tip and link... I'll check it out.

Could light leakage be causing the significant yellowing three weeks into bloom? I feel like it's a nutrient delivery issue.

Not enough nitrogen in your feed is causing yellowing leafs to early.
Check your formulas N content and make sure that you arent using a feed that has no N in it at all.
I always add a little bit of my veg feed every 2 weeks during flowering and i remove yellowing leaves immediately.

You might be surprised at what a difference the white paint/Mylar(spelling?) etc make to your light and your plants
