I think its powdery mildew

I have been having this problem for a few months now. My mothers fan leaves began getting these white spots on the leaves. Looks like powdery mildew as far as I can tell so I got a sulfur vaporizer. The mildew has yet to be a problem for me, but seems to kill off some fan leaves during veg. stage on my soil plants.

Take a look at the pics. HPS picture displays problem in maturity on mother plants. Kills off fan leaves at a scary rate lately on the moms.

1st question is - are we sure it is powdery mildew or could it be something else? The sulfur does not exactly seem to be doing much preventing or destroying of the mildew.

It looks to me like you have mites. Turn over the leaves and look for little white eggs. If they are there then good luck. If not you should always spray something to prevent problems like this and keep your room and air clean.

i got some powder mildew on some big ass flower the wife planted in our garden. (non pot)...what you have does not look like (from the pics) the powder mildew we had on our vegetation.

rather than small spots, what we had was from .125" to 1", usually away from the edge of the leaf, and was grey-white and fuzzyish, like someone had dipped a finger in dirty powdered sugar then touched the tip to the leaf...all over.

did you do the mites check? I got some mitey clones that had spots similar to what you show...

also, does your camera have a macro setting? that may help get some more detail for the good doctors.

good luck, holmes. :peace:

ya true it could be mites i guess. No visible mite action on the bottom or top of leafs. Might need to get a microscope or something?

nah...you can see mites and the eggs with your buck naked eye. but a 30x scope or a 10x loupe couldn't hurt...

all you have to do is watch the underside of the leaf for a bit...the mites are little dark to red specks that will move if you touch them, or on their own, usually before long.

their eggs are white to yellowish and will be pretty much all over between the veins... there should also be a fine silk webbing between the veins.

considering how speckled your leaves are, it seems like you should see them pretty easily if you start turning over leaves.

but I mean, if there's no mites, then there's no need to take action with a neem oil or other miticide...and you can focus on other possible solutions.

peace.

Thanks again for the input king. I have had 2 sightings of some small insect looking thing. I have no idea what color it is, but its definitely not black. What do white flies look like and how do they effect plants? The FAQ section is vague and multi-theoried as with most cannabis research.

I will try to photograph this elusive bug. I have noticed some black spots few and far between under the leaves. These could be tiny chunks of soil from translating. I will try to see if they move today. Thanks again King

looks like spider mites for sure, just look at the underside of the leaves. To help u see u can mist them w/water and u will prob be able to at least see the webs.

my pleasure, holmes. I hope you get the remedy you need, one way or the other.

mites reproduce pretty quickly; every five days, I think, and hundreds of eggs are laid... again, looking at your leaves, if you have mites, they shouldn't be tough to find.

I got some clones that were all speckled leaves like yours, and I found eggs and mites almost immediately...no magnification.

I've never seen an infestation from day 1, but what I hear is they start at the lower leaves of the plant (they crawl up the stem) and move up the plant as their numbers increase.

Interesting thought on misting the underside to see if you get a web all dewy...i'd just say make sure your 'mist' is a pretty well atomized mist, and not a coarse spray...otherwise, you may not get the surface tension you're looking for.

If you do have mites, I've heard 'einstein oil' is one of the best non-systemic remedies around... (I have some myself...from what I understand, you don't want a systemic miticide as you will be consuming the plant.) It is a cold pressed neem oil.

I know nothing of whiteflies, symptoms, or remedies. I'd see if google images has anything...

Also, I don't want to pimp the business across the street, but this ain't the only grow site with a 'growers guide'. Some are more detailed in areas that this growfaq is not...but that doesn't make it good information, y'dig? I tend to like pictures to prove it.

I also tend to look for corroberration of growing techniques/troubleshooting...if more than a few people have done something with decent success, then I see if the technique will fit my needs.

Look around a bit on the net and you can find some pretty cool grow ish.

Good luck, holmes. And let us know.

Peace.

also...there's lotsa different types of mites. I don't know if any of them are black, but your light color and intensity may skew your perception of color.

they are little dark specks, and a small piece of dirt on a leaf has caused my hard to skip a beat more than once; thinking those clones I got rid of managed to leave a little parting gift...

i'm a little overprotective...it's my first grow!

Regular application of neem oil is a real good idea, mites or not..,I have spots alot like those in the picture...have had on earlier grows..don't know what it is, but it doesen't seem to hurt the plants..,:blsmoke:
