Thumbs up Congress to vote on medical mj
I'm cross posting this; thought readers on a couple of different threads might be interested in this link to an op-ed about the upcoming vote on the Hinchey-Rohrabacher amendment. This would be a great time for interested parties to get some letters to Congress, whichever way they (the writers) lean on this issue.

Focus Alert

Here's how to get it done:
1) Go to https://forms.house.gov/wyr/welcome.shtml to get the name and address of your Congressperson.
2) Write the letter. Friendly, just asking them to support the issue. Keep it short, i.e, not more than one page. Write it when you're in a sensible frame of mind, and be friendly. Politicians like all the friends they can get!
3) Find a friend to write a letter, too. Next time you're at the store, pick up some paper, pens, envelopes and stamps so you can write together whenever you have company. This will encourage each other!
4) Repeat the process once a week; just have a little get together and spend five minutes for everybody to write a letter. SERIOUS NOTE from the world of politics: It only takes a dozen letters to create the impression of significant public interest; an elected official getting a dozen letters a week will really feel the public presence.

The first letter will probably have minimal impact, but it's like a lot of things in life: After the first time or two, the effects become more noticeable. Keep the letters going, once a week... My congressperson, each of my two Senators, and then the President, or maybe my State representative if there's some legislation pending in my state.. That's one letter a week to somebody, times how many letter writers (i.e., VOTERS)?
Hey, write a letter and post back with the results. Let's encourage each other on this and let our elected officials know that this is important!

In writing to your Senator, please be specific regarding the Hinchey-Rohrabacher amendment to the appropriations bill that funds the Justice Department (S.3182). The amendment has not been filed and will not be filed until the Justice appropriations bill goes to the floor.

If you look up Hinchey-Rohrabacher amendment in Thomas.gov it references several Hinchey-Rohrabacher measures, but not the one we're talking about today. THOMAS (Library of Congress)

As a Senate Bill, it must pass the Senate before it is sent to the House.

This will not be a bill when filed. It will be an amendment to a bill (S.3182).

Hinchey-Rohrbacher (sp?) has been voted on each of the past few years. In 2007, it would have passed if only 54 additional Congresspersons had voted for it.
Congress will soon vote on the Hinchey-Rohrbacher amendment, cutting off funding for Federal raids on medical mj programs. In 2007, 54 additional “Aye” votes would have been enough to end Federal funding for the raids.

Each of us can help get those additional 54 votes in 2008. It takes less than five minutes:

1) Find our Congressional representative’s name and mailing address at _
https://forms.house.gov/wyr/welcome.shtml_ (takes one minute; be sure to delete the little tails off of the URL when you paste it into your browser, or it won’t work)

2) Find out how he or she voted on Hinchey in 2007 at _
http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2007/roll733.xml_ (takes one minute; again, clip off the little tails from the URL)

3) Write a nice, friendly letter, either thanking our Congressperson for supporting Hinchey-Rohrbacher in 2007 or encouraging him or her to support it in 2008; put the address on an envelope; put on a stamp; and walk it out to the mailbox (takes three minutes)

Hey, five minutes to help get the 54 votes Hinchey-Rohrbacher needs, so that medical mj patients in legal medical mj states can follow their physician’s advice without fear of Federal prosecution. Take the five minutes today, then find a friend and do it again!

Only 54 votes needed; your letter and your friends letter can make the difference!

(You can read more at
http://www.safeaccessnow.org/article.php?list=type&type=318 or http://stopthedrugwar.org/chronicle_blog/2007/jul/26/detailed_compilation_stats_and_v ; be sure to write; reading is great, but writing gets results!)
