DETROIT -- Voters decide today on a state ballot proposal to let severely ill people legally buy, grow and use small amounts of marijuana.


Opponents say there's no scientific evidence marijuana is effective treatment for glaucoma, cancer, AIDS and other conditions.


But supporters say federal officials have stymied medical research into marijuana's benefits despite evidence it can relieve suffering.

The measure would remove state penalties for registered patients using marijuana but wouldn't create legal dispensaries for the drug or affect a federal ban.


Recent polls have shown likely voters favor Proposal 1.

Twelve states have medical marijuana laws, eight from ballot initiatives.

I agree... who is going to define 'severely'.

We need to get this on a national ballot to legalize it for all... not just for medical use! MJ is way better then alcohol and I'm betting at least 60% of the population would vote to legalize it if they knew the TRUTH about the plant!

It's nothing more then laughable that tobacco and alcohol are legal for all adults to use.... but mj is not. It's just one more example of big government being too involved in the personal lives of this country's citizens.

Keep in mind this is only state, the FED holds funding and grants away from easy states. once the fed eases these states will likely follow. My state is not leagal but possession is possession there is not cultivation laws, and state law now eased punishment up to a quarter pound.......
