HOUSTON -- A Houston Independent School District assistant principal has been arrested on drug charges, KPRC Local 2 reported Friday.


Houston police said several pounds of marijuana were found in James Earl Street's condo in 8800 block of Woodway Drive, along with evidence that he was growing it there.


Street is an assistant principal at Sharpstown High School. He was charged with possession of marijuana.

"That's a bad deal for the students and my child," parent Tamika Johnson said. "I'm very shocked about it."


According to the Harris County District Attorney's office, Street had two growing rooms that had potted plants, artificial lighting and water sources.

The two rooms contained just under eight pounds of marijuana, investigators said.


The Houston Fire Department found the plants in July. A neighbor called firefighters to his condo because there was a water leak.


"We were shocked he was growing marijuana," former neighbor Alisa Slack said. "We pretty much suspected there was something irregular going on because they were very secretive."


Neighbors said they were suspicious of Street and his wife, Judith, for a long time.


Neighbors said he was recently evicted from the condominium complex.


"He had a lot of people visiting them that were young people dressed in black and with weird haircuts and very unfriendly, downright hostile," Slack said.
