no, in the US he is not required to tell you. that is why they are "undercover". late

even if they were required they could just lie and say you never asked them.

Watch COPS on tv sometime and see how well that idea works. If cops think you are trolling for something, and they are undercover, they will come up to you and say something like, "hey you want to score a little pussy?" or "looking for some crack?". If you say, "are you a cop, you look like a cop", they will say no. If you say almost anything other than no, go away, they can continue to play you. Anything other than no, go away, and you will go to jail.
