Talking New Amsterdam tourists ban news

    Amsterdam News

    June 2012
Well the ban is now in place in the boarder cities but reports are that the coffeeshops are refusing to operate the pass scheme which is great news.

Police have visited the shops, informing them they will be closed down for a month if they do not operate within the new law.

Amsterdam is next on the list from January 1st 2013. All the coffeeshops here say
they will just ignore the silly law. Even better news is that the conservative
government collapsed last week so it is likely that a new government will abandon the introduction of the new law after elections are held in September. Fingers crossed.

The Mayor of Amsterdam, Eberhard van der Laanis totally against the ban as he says as much as 70% of tourists visit Amsterdam to smoke and visit a coffeeshop. Theban will most likely hurt anything tourist related including all the hotels and museums most of which depend on the huge amount of tourists who visit Amsterdam each year. Bans of any sort do not work as we have seen over the years. Banning anything just makes it go underground and same Will happen once again in Amsterdam. It is like going backwards in time. Amsterdam is indeed changing and not for the better.

The Coffee shop owners are bringing a case against the ban, but will most likely loose, the say they intend taking it all the way to the European Court of Human Rights, on the basis that the Dutch should not be allowed to discriminate against people on the basis of where they live, we will see what happens.

The moves are part of a tougher approach to drugs introduced by the coalition conservative-led government, elected 18 months ago. Recently the government reclassified so called strong cannabis as a hard drug, after recent reports that it has a psychotic effect on some users. The opposite is happening in the UK where last month the government reclassified cannabis down to class C a much more sensible approach.

For years I've wanted to visit Amsterdam. Sounds like the states are moving forward and the former bastion is retreating. It's a crazy world.

don't worry, i live over here and the coffeeshop is kind of my job.
80% says that the shops won't close for tourists.
the cities that are close to the borders were first "BUT" the police cant handle the drugtrafficing, drugdealers on the streets and all sorts of
    inconvienience.
other shops like tabaccoshops gasstations restaurants and bars are closing because the tourists are staying away or going to rotterdam and amsterdam.
the gouvernment has learnd its lesson over here.
believe me when i say the shops will be open for a long long time

It wont happen. I stay there a lot of the time and they wont hurt the economy/tourists and others. If i was to happen the dutch will suffer a massive loss of revenue and they cant afford to let that happen. They will end up with a ghost town.

They can't make that happen, Amsterdam known by its sex museums and coffee shops.. If that happen they will loose a lot of tourists and it will be no mans land..
Am happy I was there last year Hope they didn't make it and visit it another time soon

Went in 2009 and did as much as I could in 10 days.

The Shops are important and I would hate to see the drug trade left to the Street Hustlers. They are bad enough now wait until they are moving weed as well.

By the way the Museums and other things are so worth the time and money. Amsterdam is more than getting high.

I HATE THE U.S. They have been on the forefront of trying to shut cannabis down on a global scale forever now and this is what happens when all the countries wanna lick their nuts.

Good thing I went to Amsterdam when this kind of thing wasn't even considered.
