Default Mmj bill introduced in Texas
Medical marijuana bill introduced in Texas

Last week, a bill was introduced that would allow seriously ill patients to raise a medical defense to charges of possessing marijuana for medical use. It would also protect doctors who make medical marijuana recommendations.

Please contact your state legislators today and ask them to give HB 164 their utmost consideration. This is a modest and compassionate proposal to make sure the seriously ill do not languish in prison for treating their suffering.

HB 164

The proposed legislative measure would allow physicians to make written or oral recommendations that, in the physician's medical opinion, the potential benefits of marijuana would likely outweigh the health risks for a particular patient. If arrested for possession of marijuana, a patient with a recommendation from his or her physician would be able to assert an affirmative defense to charges arising from his or her medical use of marijuana. If a court accepts the affirmative defense, it would mean that a patient could avoid jail time and fines. The bill would not, however, protect patients from the initial arrest.

Texas Legislature Considers Medical marijuana Reform
Ask your representative to support House Bill 164
NORML is pleased to announce that House Bill 164, an act to allow for certain marijuana patients to present a medical necessity defense in court, has been referred the House Committee on Public Health.

If approved, this measure would offer protections to patients who use marijuana medicinally, as well as to physicians who discuss marijuana therapy with their patients.

Please take a moment today to contact your elected officials and urge them to support HB 164. If your representative sits on the House Committee on Public Health, it is particularly important that he or she hears from you now. For your convenience, a pre-written letter will be e-mailed to your state representatives when you enter your contact information below. Additional information about this bill is available from the Texas Coalition for Compassionate Care.

Thank you for supporting NORML's marijuana law reform efforts in Texas.

Dude, thanks for the info. I done all the radio & tv people, & the Gov. people. All kinds of return e-mails. My argument to the State Reps. was how many deaths does it take to put up a stop sign, how many gang related deaths does it take to legalize pot, & concentrate on the bad stuff. Etc.
