Weed has been illegal for a long time now and the roots of greed (on both sides of the law) are deep..... take the money away from weed and it will stand a much higher chance of becoming legal. Otherwise, don't hold your breath. Don't look now, we are our own worst enemy..

All people would in fact love the the job gardening a expensive sweet odor plant which is general done with no hard labor gardening in a warm humid environment... That person has this lovely scent on the mind all day and sells it on a large scale cheaply using large economies scales making cheaper to buy than growing it between friends.

legalization would do the following
1) save over $30 billion per year in enforcement and incarceration costs
2) generate over $100 billion per year assuming taxes make up for price changes to keep price at todays street level (and assuming no change in consumption)
3) free hundreds of thousands of innocent people in our prison system--providing wage income of $50 billion per year
4) reduce violent crimes by 50% (criminals have comparative advantage on the black market and make immense profits, empowering them instead of legitimate businesses or the govt)
5) reduce teen use via access laws
6) reduce the gateway effect by having controlled marijuana dispensers (like coffee shops)
7) reduce alcohol consumption, thus savings lives and money
reduce deforestation by providing a highly renewable and sustainable alternative
9) reduce pollution by same means as above in other industries
10) help AIDS, cancer, anorexia and bulimia patients receive the treatment they need
11)allow for the development of the hemp industry

ask me if u want sources..i just finished a research paper on the topic

Personally I don't buy the notion that if it were legal everyone would simply grow their own. Alcohol, once illegal, can be brewed at home and while many people do, most people don't.

Growing takes time and money and I think most people would prefer the convenience of going to a coffee house and simply purchasing it. Just like liquor stores and bars, some people would buy and go home to smoke, while others would hang out at the coffee house and socialize with other tokers.

I'm not really sure what would happen to the prices.... but I don't believe they would drop significantly because it costs money to grow good mj and takes time. Alcohol isn't cheap, well some is, but the good stuff still fetches a good price and the industry makes bazillions. I think many of us have this notion that EVERYONE will simply grow it..... but I'm not too sure about that. Sure many may jump into growing.... but ultimately I think most would simply prefer to skip the work and simply drive to the store to purchase it.

One thing for sure..... I don't think it should be regulated to sales in liquor stores... if anything I'd rather see it in sold in it's own stores (coffee houses if you will). This would provide the opportunity for new businesses and jobs. I just don't want to see our friend tied to the liquor industry in any way.

Anyway... that's my 2 cents

LEGALIZE IT.... I'll be the first in my town to line up for a license to open a coffee house

All good points, respect to Eric and Florida (if I can give 2).
I personally think that there should be companies who are based in certain 3rd world countries, where the buds are grown organically, outdoors by local residents (they could also grow hemp). Kind of like the fair trade thing. I've not really thought that part through, however with some careful planning, weed farming could be the beginning of the end of world poverty.
Or maybe that's my high thoughts
Or maybe that
