IMO i think its a good start! If other counties decided to go with the citations it would save a shit load of money and jail space.

It really just seems like the beginning of more toleration by state gov. of marijuana.

Na i think they were just talking about that one county.....there was three counties that have gone to citations instead of jail time.

Sure would be nice to catch a fine instead of jail time over a bag. When we lived in El Paso I can remember a few times where we used to party in the desert and when the cops would bust us, if you had a bag they would just make you dump it and poor out your beer and then let you drive off. Not sure if its like that now though

HB 2391 was enacted in the last Texas Legislature and took effect on September 1, 2007. It gives LEOs the discretion to ticket offenders for possession of 4 ounces or less.

It is up to each jurisdiction to decide if they choose to comply. Jail overcrowding/expense is forcing the issue in Houston which is why they are considering it almost a year after the law went into effect.

It's a good sign because officials are beginning to recognize the strain the Drug War is putting on their local public safety budgets.

Well that's fucked!! There JUST NOW deciding to re-evaluate there marijuana laws? We've known marijuana has absolutely no serious long term effects. Yet it's criminalized where-as cigarettes do cause many adverse health effects yet it's legal? America is fulled of hypocrites or just idiots you elect hypocrites into office, or both! I just don't understand how prohibition has helped our society at all, shouldn't the government spend money on educating the people about drugs and let them decide for themselves instead of prosecuting the users, and filling the pubic's brains with propaganda. And people wonder why more people in America know who Cornal Sanders is than Abraham Lincoln, maybe because there government feeds them so much bullshit!

you figure a million dollars saved per county and judging from how many i saw in the state of texas alone your lookin at 50m a year saved, PLUS the money theyre gonna get from nabbin people and writing tickets. I dont know why your saying it seems a little fucked up. honestly it appears to be one more step closer to legalization. Being that your on this site i presume you smoke, so would you rather go to jail or just get a fine? We'd all prefer it to be 100% legal but the odds of that happening are pretty slim. at least for now.
