I've tested with the state (CA) for possible employment, and ranked very high in the exam. Now I've received a notice requesting that I apply for a position, major woo-hoo because we REALLY need for me to be working. However, kind of a shit-streak for me because one of the jobs I applied for last year told me that if I was a candidate they would be taking HAIR samples for testing. My hair is pretty long, so I was like, "Um.. eeyeah, so there's a few years' worth of smoking history goin' on there." (Fortunately, they didn't call me.)

I've been doing a lot of research and I know that if I'm offered the job I will be tested. Problem is that I can't find out how I'll be tested. Urine, saliva, or blood I'm fine, but if they want to take hair then I'm straight fucked. I really need a job, been looking for about a year, so this is important to me.

Should I actually be hired there are policies and procedures in place that give me a minimum 30 days notice for random testing, so I'm not too worried about that. I've been searching for information on drug testing and NOTHING talks about hair.

Well, if the test's so expensive why would a bank do it for a stupid part-time teller position? Do you know how the test is done or how it works?

There's a shampoo product to clean your hair. Foliclean I think it's called. passyourdrugtest.com (google it) has it and a lot of pretty good info about the dreaded whiz quiz. Turns out the test is actually on the oil in your hair. The hair acts like a sponge holding it. This stuff strips out your oil and then you use a conditioner to replace it. Or getting a perm if your a chick (or a Brady Bunch groupie) will do the same thing.

My problem is that I KNOW the state will test, I just haven't been able to find out HOW they're going to test.

Go to that site and find the link for "use time table". There's an explanation of how far back each method can test for. ie saliva test is 24-48hrs for green. Figure out which test applies to your situation and prepare accordingly. Best of Luck, I'm sure you'll do fine.

i have researched the kits to help you pass the follicle test on other forums. it seems to have had mixed results in my opinion. i was recently laid off from my job and looked at other employers in the same line of work and some of them do the follicle test. so i am also interested in the results from some of these products.

It's like this, my hair's down to the middle of my back. My husband knows how my back and hips bother me, so he's been scoring for me (he doesn't even smoke!). I wouldn't even worry about it except for that damn woman from the bank who gleefully informed me that they cut your hair to test at this bank.

I've been smoking fairly regularly for months, easily. I go through dry spells, and wet spells. I can easily find a urine test relatively nearby, but I don't have the scratch to drop on a hair test and a shampoo and all that (but my husband would probably go ahead and bounce some checks if I told him I needed it). I found some information that talks about what most labs do and what they're looking for. Basically, if they're really good and test carefully, there's no way I'll ever pass unless that shampoo actually works.

But! I had no idea a shampoo even existed, so I really appreciate the information you've given me.

Um, no shampoo in the world is going to make the test come up clean if you have long hair and youve been smoking for years. if they test your hair, it will show up, and ur only out is to have someone elses hair with you somehow

Well, at $50 a pop that would be an expensive lesson to learn. I contacted a friend who used to work for the FDA, and he said that samples have to be frozen as mandated by the state (lawsuits and the like) so they like pee. I have another friend who's former LEO and she said I'll pee. BIG RELIEF.

Funny thing I discovered in my searching is that apparently alcohol use is recorded throughout the hair shaft and this one test is used commonly in the U.K. to help determine alcohol abuse (by whom I do not know). I can't remember the names of the compounds created that are taken up into the hair shaft, but it was rather interesting.
