Criminal lawyers don't work like that.. There is no money coming your way if you win so they have nothing to gain.. Unless a criminal lawyer sees you case as a worthy cause, or good PR (Which isn't going to happen) you'll have to pay retainer..You might be able to get enough advice to understand what you could expect just by window-shopping for a lawyer over the phone if you ask the right questions.. If you're broke and you do get charged, then you'll have access to a public defender., but obviously not until then..
