I've been looking at LED's for my flower room, and frankly I am put off by the costs and small 'footrint' of what I see.I am not tech savvy in these and am looking for advice from those that have gone on befor me.My flower room is an 8 ft. x 8 ft. area with my ladies growing in (2) 3 ft. X 8 ft. areas. So my effective coverage has to be for 48 sqare ft. of plant area. From what I have been able to glean reading the adds, and checking out the various web pages for manufactures, I would have to spend a fortune to replace the 4 400 watt lamps I am now using. And as I am a low budget grower, and would like to get the most 'bang' for my buck, what options are there? Who makes the best and brightest? Can it even be done reasonably for flowering? Are there any really good deals out there??I'm so confused.......

You are rightly confused my friend, lots of misleading LED info out there...

Let's see if I can help you out a bit, 3x8 is kind of a weird dimension, I'd get smaller LED's that would cover (2) 3x4... so essentially you'd be looking at four lights because you have (2) 3x8 areas...

Any way you swing it, your start up costs are going to be high...

4 PG260's(180watt actual draw each) from Hydroponics Hut would certainly do the trick, you might even be able to get away with 4 PG180's(160watt actual draw each)...

If you could re-arrange the plants to make them more square, you would have more options... like instead of 3x8, do 6x4.... you'd have more options for lighting....

Just something to think about! Hope it helped!

I would personally get three/four diamond series 100 w LED's on each 3' by 8' or three 200 watt's for optimal coverage.. But this means you'd need 3 big ones for the lights.. Not sure how much you'd like to pay :b

To replace your (4) 400w hps @ 1600w, I'd suggest to go with about 1200w LED. I use Advanced LED. they have the extreme flower models and diamond series. You can go watt for watt and be blown away if you want four of the 400w diamonds. Otherwise you could go with a couple of the 600w's or 800w's. You're probably looking at $2000-4000 depending on how close to watt for watt you get no matter how you split the panels. You could always ask the companies about discounts for multiple purchases or for doing journals.

Maybe you'd be willing to try these: SolarStorm. They have a grower's feedback program where if you do a journal for them and put up a 50% downpayment they'll let you keep the light at that price when you're done. Haven't seen any grows with these lights yet, but they look to be some beasts!

Hope that has helped some.

If you haven't checked out the PG550, it's listed as 60sqft coverage area and able to sustain up to 14 plants through their whole life cycle, 470w. You may be able to use a single light with decent results. They are pretty good. If not, add one of your HPS above and the PG550 near or hanging on it's side. Next grow buy another PG550 and your grow would be pretty killer. ~940w of LEDs for about $1650... Each is $819 or $809 per two

I prefer a modular set up and more than effectively replaced two air cooled 400w hps lights plus close to 400w cfl side lighting with 3 PG 180s, 1 PG 250 (2010 model of the 260 a little less powerful - ebay refurb item), and a blackstar 50w that I picked up super cheap on ebay. Not a huge fan of blackstars but it was cheap. Went from over 1200w to about 600w of led output. No sacrifice in yield, buds are better in the end (this could be due to lack of heat stress issues I was having with HPS, either way I and my plants are happy).
