an ode to my joy.

perfectly rolled in my hand
i place the end to my lips
feeling the stiff cardboard of the crutch
i reach for a lighter and admire
my creation for one last moment.

flicking the lighter
i burn the tip down
and inhaling deeply,
becoming blessed
with decadent smoke.
holding my breath
just for a moment
tasting the thick, piney aroma
while it fills my lungs,
tickling my throat.

exhale.

the smoke becomes entangled
with the sun shining
through the blinds.
playing games,
chasing itself
in small swirls
as if from the tip
of some sort of
medieval dragons snout.

i look for the ashtray,
the couch feeling a little
softer,
my fingers
beginning to feel
a little less sore.
the whole time chuckling
to myself.
i find it and flick the tip of ash off.
the burning ember
shining as if a small glowing sun
was held between my fingers.
i take another puff
and pass it off
exhaling as i get up from the couch.

i open the front door
and walk to the balcony,
watching the plaza across the street
watching the people rushing
in and out of stores,
like small animals in
some sort of laboratory maze.

today will be another day
i think
and now it will be
a little better.
