Recommended height for air-cooled 1000W HPS?

If you disagree, sweet we can bounce ideas and experience off each other. I have been taught plenty of things by people on this site. But if you just want to be a dick then piss off.[/QUOTE]

Boy this guy really hates to be contradicted, doesn't he?

First of all, my closet grow was just because I had a short stent in an apartment.
You're just plain wrong dude and I am revamping this discussion because there has been bullshit posted here for years that has gone unchallenged. There is such a thing as different environmental factors (not to mention dudeman pretends that all strains are equatorial strains) that lead to certain, isolated factors being more tolerable. I don't care who anyone is or how many grows they have done. Nothing they say is going to change the FACT that I keep my plants within 10-15 inches all the way to harvest and have not had a problem once. Period. No matter how much people shout that this will hurt them, I am not going to go to my flower room and find out that what has been working for three years has suddenly stopped. Wanna talk about quality? The dispensaries around here made a habit of buying my buds and never even letting them see the show room. Maybe I am part of some conspiracy to mislead people into bad grows or maybe, just maybe, good and bad growing are categories better left less strictly defined. I'm headed to tell the latest Red Diesel of mine that it and the patients and the local growers are all wrong about it being dense, strong, and tasty.

I didnt go through the whole htread, but mine are about 15-18 inches I would guess. If you have alot of air moving through it, it stays relatively cool

just my opinion

Your going to have to do some trial and error to find the best distance for your variety and hood.
If your hood is ventilated enough you can probably put it 10 inches from the plants.
You may find some plants will leach out on the top leaves by putting it this close.
A 1000 watter will disperse the light out more evenly at 20 inches or so, and still give you good growth.
Good luck.
It won't stretch too far

I have 1000w air cooled, my light stays cool enough I can almost touch the glass. I keep the MH within 3-4" of the canopy, but when I switch to the Eye Hortilux Super HPS I have to raise to 10" even though it feels cool at 3-4" the IR spectrum causes leaf bleaching any closer. So you cannot just go by ambient heat, radient IR projection can cause just as much damage as physical heat. I always used cheaper HPS and the comparision is night and day. Much better penetration to inner growth also. My leaves are all dark green from the most bottom and inner leaves to the outter most leaves. If trying to cover a full 4x4 area 1000w needs to be 18"-24" away from the top of the tallest canopy however everyone should be trying to keep the canopy as even as possible all the way accross. At least in a tent you should be. A room is different. Essentially you want to balance coverage with intensity by finding the sweetspot for the light. As close as possible without damage but max coverage at the same time. All grows have a sweet spot. Im good at hitting the sweet spot I been told! Lol. :p

Seriously, no disrespect intended but that is really bad advice. You are confusing temp with radiant heat. osc fans are not really for cooling they are for circulating co2 and building branches strong. If it was that close your plants WILL fry no matter what and they will go through water very fast to try and cool off. Then they will clog up and become toxic with all the nutes not being used. 1000w at 10 inches is absolutely insane.
Not true at all I'm running at 12 to 16 inches away with leaf temps in mid 70s

Look at how commercial growers do it. Double ended 1000w HPS up nice and high from the plants. If you have a strong enough light, you want it up high so it bounces around your reflective material and gets a better spread of light to the canopy.

first one to mention the most important part, leaf temps! lol. only took nearly 12 years to get there in this thread :bigjoint:
Yeh man I been reading this thread for 4 or 5 years just got growing Last june jumped right In with perpetuals not knowing a fucking thing months of head scratching and dialing buying one little thing at a time went from a t5 to one cmh then another 315 then a nano 630 then realized I needed red got a 600 hps then a 1000 and in the midst of trying soil hydro forms coco etc. I wound up with another t5 and a 240 watt carson similar to a spyder but a mini version with 4 rails it's a helluva game but I absolutely love playing it

And also now I have 10 or so pulls under my belt first one was about 1 zip a plant last one being 5 to 6ish running 3 batches of 4 to 5 in a 10 by 10 under 1600 watts of hps and 945 watts of cmh with a led quantum rail for supplement. Basically 3 5 by 5s in a 10 by 10 room

So what kind of output are you getting per watt? My last grow (second grow of my life) was 1.2g/w out of a 5x5 with a single 1000w.

I don't have an accurate number because I'm running perpetuals it's a 315 cmh 600 super hps for one 5 by 5 a 630 nanolux dual bulb 630 and a 1000 hps for 5 by 10 I have two rows of 4 in the 5 by 10 and 4 In a 2 rows of 2 under the 315 and 600 my last pull was 18 zips and I didnt have the 315 then just 4 sherbets under a 600 3 in rdwc one in coco and a chemdog in 5 gallon coco my best out of the 5 was the chem dog was about 6 zips
