Iam interested cos my posh LED flashlight has about 400, and that is ruddy bright. But my grolux is like looking at the sun!

So, I noticed that I never see this on these grow forums but I have a question.

If plants tend to like the bluer spectrum (400-500nm) why not use Marine Aquarium T5's which are specifically designed for 420-460nm for the vegging phase and add some 50k's in as you get closer to Flowering?

Just a thought.

Sourdiesel, Why in the world are you growing inside in Costa Rica. You have great sun and few cops. Yes, I have been there.

I would be surprised if you can find any reasonable quality CFL's in CR. As detection is less of an issue, I would go with an HPS in either case, if you just insist on not usign that great tropical sun.

Lol, I loved this... Yes we're calling you fucking stupid because you can't convert to lumens without knowing the distance and no meter measures lumens because it is impossible. It's like measuring how much water is in a 4x4 box without knowing how deep it goes. It can't be done, so yes... you sir are fucking stupid.

Wait. Confused, yet not so confused.

Lumens=the amount of light 1 candle gives in a square foot area.
Candela=the amount of light a candle produces.

So if this is correct, which it is, then some people are just not understanding.

The amount of lumens is important for volume of light produced in a designed area.
That is why 400w works great for a 3x3 or 3x4 or so maybe even 4x4 depending on height.
That is why 600w = more plants
That is why 1000w = even more plants.

The idiot saying lumens is not important is like saying size doesn't matter to a girl.

if i have 3 24" flourescent 550 lumens 2 24" flourescent 900 lumens 4 1600 lumen cfl's hanging about 3-4 inches from my plants how many lumens do i have total? and is that enough for vegetation? all the 24" lights are blue or full spectrum for live plants in aquariums

I have read up on lighting for the last few days but I remain confused...what would be the general rule of thumb when it comes to either watts or lumes per sq ft with the cfl's? I have heard that watts are what to go by and also that I should concentrate on the lumes per sq ft....I need a drink
