If your in a cupboard with no ventilation do not get a 600watt hps,you will fry them and your cupboard if your not careful.
Only buy a 600watter if you can adequately vent the area i.e. with aircon or an exhaust system,more cash again.
I would recommend starting of with a couple of 150-250 watt high output cfl systems with reflectors if your in a tight space.
Having said that if your willing and able to buy adequate ventilation equipment then doing so will obviously give you a better yield

i got 600w hps wi ballas full set up off ebay for 40 wi free delivery so got a bargin realy depending on where ur growing i dont use ventelation just a few fans on them

u should be ok i got 4 fans on mine it keeps the room nice and i got a 1000 watter so u should be fine

First off...welcome to the site!!! You took the ribbing about your wattage to plant ratio in good stride.... you'll fit right in here

You said 3 x 3 CLOSET ... The word closet makes me think you mean 3' Wide by 3' Deep? If so what is the HEIGHT??? The reason I ask is if it is a standard closet it is too small for 18 plants.... but I'd hate to see you pull any before you know which are females and which are males.... Is there any way you can put in shelving to maximize the space while your plants are young and not so big?

Here's a picture from Farm Friend's grow room to give you an idea of what I mean:

That kind of shelving comes in all sizes .... I have one in a small closet myself. You can see how she has the lighting hanging from the shelving. If you can put something like that in your closet then you could bring all 18 along for a while... perhaps until you get some pre-flowers so that when you do have to pull some... it won't be the girls

When you get ready to flower you can pull out the shelving.... and keep your strongest 6-9 girls .....hopefully you get that many.

Thanks Florida...closet space is 3 ft wide and id say about 7 to 8 ft tall...still not knowing exactly what i needed for lighting in that space i went and got 2 150 watt cfls today. they have 2600 lumens each...sylvania soft white...am i on the right track with this or do i need something different?...I was gonna get 3 or 4 more but wanted to find out b4 i waste the money...thx for the help

Well... if you are going to try to bring all 18 along for a while then you still have no where near enough light. I'm not a lighting expert...but I use a HID in my grow tent and 3 100 watt CFLs for my early seedlings... and I only start 3 at a time.

I'm thinking you would need a minimum of 10 CFLs in that space.... but that's really just a guess... I could be way off. Personally I think you should do what I mentioned above.... rack and fluorescent shop lights.... they are pretty cheap and easy to put up.
