If you are trying to spend little money, Go to wal-mart and buy 4/2 bulb shop lights for $6 each. They take 4 foot fl bulbs

but I was talking more in the way of a T5 fluoro 8 light 48in system .
at the local store they want 450 er' so for a 2 ft 8 bank system and Im sure theres a better deal somewhere in this country.
they have T5's at walmart ???

Sorry I was talking about t12. But for that money you can get a valueline 400w switchable HPS/MH ballast that comes with a bulb and a crap reflector for $159 or a vented reflector for $219 (100-139er)

no sir Im in the midwest I have a 20k 400 now but Im looking for some fluorosIve read and read and read and it just makes more sense to give them all 30 to 40.000 lumen than to give them a few hundo

Dunno if I can post a link....just google t5 lights and do some searching. PM me if you cant find the place.....they have single tube 48" fixture's with bulb (6500 kelvin bulb) and built in ballasts for 25.00 a pop. They even include a cable to daisy chain them together so they all turn on/off together. Think I saw two places selling them for similar prices but one just happened to be across town so I picked them up. I spent another 40 bucks in aluminum (for a reflector) and another 15 or so in misc stuff to make the whole unit adjustable easily.....so for 255 and some DIY you have the same thing.

Just my 2 cents....In the middle of moving atm will post a DIY guide on how to do it and all...just need to find the box with my camera

20k 400?

HPS 400w has 55,000 lumen and a MH has 35,000.

Plants need for ROBUST GROWTH
2,50 Lumens - Seedling
2,500 Lumens- Veg stage
25,000 Lumens Flowering

The absolute most efficient bulb is the 600W HPS (150 lumens per watt)
At best (40,000 lumen) the lights you are talking about have 100 lumens per watt. That’s not bad but it's not better than 400 HPS at 137.5 lumens per watt.
With a switchable ballast (400w) you can veg with MH with more light than you need, and HPS flower with more light than t12 always in a perfect spectrum, for less money.

thanks for the info cloudflyer, the 400 I have is a 400 watt radium bulb for aquariums its a super blue german light and its a 20.000k bulb from I gather the T5 is a smarter buy, you have 40k lumen more even distributed with no heat a much better spectrum and its about the same price .
