Because any light that can be seen (like through wrapping paper) has actually passed through the mylar. Even if you double it up the light is not going to bounce and pass back through.

It is still better than most things though.

it double layered is going to prevent as much light from actually making it through it though. with green saran wrap you can keep adding layers and layers of it on something and each layer you make is going to prevent a little more light from passing through.

But in this case we are not trying to prevent light from passing through something. We are trying to reflect as much light as possible back on the plant.

Adding layers and layers to colored saran wrap allows the light to be captured between the layers and dissiplated as heat energy. It will not however provide much reflectivity to provide energy to the plant.

This is 100% true I also like the way you think, its the way I was thinking when i set up my grow room. with emergency blankets, all it took was 2 layers to COMPLETELY block out the light. Even one layer does a pretty good job, but the reflectivity is compromised by all the folding they do to the emergency blankets. One blanked is under $2 also and is decent sized. maybe not as many square feet as you would get on a roll of wrapping paper, but it folds out to be pretty big, like a little more than 6'x4', maybe closer to 7'x5', there is less taping involved because you aren't working with all those narrow strips or wrapping paper. Be sure to get plenty of tape, you'd be surprised how much you need. I needed double what i had origionally estimated... and I even used math. there are always unexpected nicks and little tears to patch when you use the cheaper stuff... but i think it's still a huge savings. after all, whats another roll of reflective tape? another $2?
