Yes you can have a carbon filter for an exhaust fan. You can connect it to ducting or directly to the fan. how its setup is up to you, you can have it blowing or pulling air it doesn't matter
Can I have a filter to reduce the smell in the same pipe as my air out fan? I need to suck out some of the hot air as my 400w hps gets temps to 82 at 50%. I need the filter for obvious reasons. I don't have much room so is there a way to do this without taking up to much space inside? And how do I set this up cause its getting very close to flower time. Ugh I'm so frustrated with this, help is needed and would be very much appreciated!

Thank you so much! I truly appreciate the quick reply! If I knew how to +rep you I would lol.
Any chance you know a way to make a DIY filter? I definitely would much rather have it pulling out the hot air, I'll only need a small fan since the room is 4l x 2w x 4h lol. I've never used hps before but I was very surprised just now... I had it set at 50% power and the temps hit 80.. Just for the hell of it I set it to 75% power and the heat has not increased at all; very odd but tomorrow when I get home I'll see what the difference is at 100% cause I need sleep now and don't have the extra 15-20 mins to wait and see what the temps do. I was planning on waiting till flower to set up the hps but I was to excited and couldn't wait, but it was also because I needed to see how hot it would get etc. if it doesn't get hotter at 100% and there's a way to set up a filter without a fan than I might not even bother with the fan lol. Would save me 200$. I did read that you can buy a bathroom vent fan but I'm assuming you'd need to splice some wires and I won't eff with electric work haha.
With a room that size i would recommend a 6" fan with a rating of 400 CFM. Except temperature increases from moving it up, just not right away. You need to have a fan for a carbon filter, and you need to get the appropriate CFM carbon filter to match the CFM of the fan, or else the effectivness can be reduced. just make sure to get a 6" fan and 6" filter their all rated for around same CFM, you could run into trouble with different sizes. You can get a carbon filter for $60 and a fan for $80 both of good quality. You will also need the fan for ventilation not just temperature
6" fan for real aye? I thought for sure the 4" would be plenty. Where can I get those for that price? Around here I'm looking at like 400 if I'm not mistaken.
You are honestly amazing! This info is really good and I'm thankful for the help! No one else I know has their card and others would never take the risk so I have nobody to ask except people here lol
Im sure plenty of people use 4" inline fans with 400 watt HPS's just fine, i don't think i have seen any with just a 4 foot roof though so it worries me a little, i would just go 6" its just a little bit more and and about the same size yet can move twice as much air, you can get a fan speed controller so you can always run it lower have less noise because you're running at a lower RPM on the fan. I do most of my shopping from Amazon and Ebay. Those deals i was talking about are on Amazon,

thats a combo deal but i dont think it comes with any straps to hold up your carbon filter if you want it mounted.
And thanks haha always feels good to help
get a 6in for the extra $20... you can use it in the future for bigger stuff, most of the good hoods come ducted in 6in. They can cool a larger light when and if you upgrade....
Hum also cooler is better, more cooling power is so worth it... way cheaper and easier to add heat if needed then to try to bring tempatures down specially in summer when your ac or whatever might already have to run almost all day and that is without a bulb in the room.
I have a 600 watt hps in a 3 x 3 x 6.5 tent.
The filter is inside the tent.
6" filter > cooled reflector > 6" fan (424 cfm) > exhaust in the other room
I use a fan speed control and usually have it about 50-75%.
Filters work better when you pull air through them instead of pushing it.
You can make a diy, but if you plan on pulling more than 5-6 ounces your diy filter might not work.
I just picked and I have two carbon filters going to control the smell.
I like high Tech Garden supply. They have cheap stuff and everything has a warranty. The last 6" carbon filter I got from them lasted almost 3 years before the wife noticed plant smell.

destinking and cooling is very important. I filter the air going into my tent. You'd be surprised what is pulled up through your buds.

Although monoecious plants are often referred to as "hermaphrodites," true hermaphrodites (which are less common) bear staminate and pistillate structures on individual flowers, whereas monoecious plants bear male and female flowers at different locations on the same plant.
Thanks for the help everyone! Very well articulated advice and makes for easy decisions for melol.
I am going to put the filter inside my tent, close the strings on it nice and tight and have the fan just a touch outside my tent so the air is pulled through the filter and not pushed as mention above.
Today is day one of no light so hopefully in a week I will see how many are ladies and how many dudes are hiding amongst them.
i really hope there's only one male, if any! I'd really like one of each strain so I'll have my fingers crossed tightly and I'll be sure to post some pics soon! Thanks again everyone!
