true about how long you plan to veg for, but i was just thining a reasonable time, dont really wanna veg all year for some trees..the longest ive ever vegged for was about 3 months and in 16l containers. they were 4 feet when i flipped the lights on them oh and the whole time i was topping every little nub on them, they were bushy....

in the pic i believe thats mk ultra, super skunk, and the purp stuff is a "bag seed" 20lb "bag"seed lol! from a friends accidental crossing of some kind of afghan and kush...... its funny how thats my strongest/best strand. i cant seem to order/find a better seed/strand yet....

i use 3.7gallon containers and veg about 3 weeks focusing mostly on roots throughout veg. the bigger your root system going into flower, imo the more they take off and the more youll yield. i like them to finish about 4 foot

what made me drop back in size was when i would toss the dirt after every grow and realize the pots were not even close to being half full.... ill try what you say on root development and them taking off, makes me wonder if ill get that affect thanks. how big around are they when you flower..if you dont mind me asking how much do you expect off your 4 footers. i shoot for alittle more then two ounces per plant...

For security reasons, I am obligated to grow in soil.

I started growing indoors using one gallon containers too (with 5-6 different strains of weed including femm and auto and regular).

Thru trial and error, I have learned NOT to finish flowering in one gallon containers (unless necessary for security).

The plants I grew in one gallon containers produced very good pot, but I lost alot of quantity b/c of the small containers.

Now I use this (indoor) transplanting regimen: 16 ounce cups to sprout, then transplant to one gallon containers for 3-4 weeks, then to three gal. containers.

This was not my idea. Somewhere on the internet, there is a grower who wrote about the great benefit to indoor growers of using two transplants. He wrote that a smart grower will let each container get heavily rooted (this is why I use clear plastic 16 oz cups and square one gallon water bottles) before transplanting. By doing this, I can assist the plant to send out roots to better completely pervade the whole soil mass in a container.

In other words, if I were to just start a seed in a three gallon pot, I would be risking "root channeling" (so to speak) - that is, long heavy roots that only grow into the natural water flow "channels" that invariable form in a container.

After my last grow, I carefully washed away the soil from many of the plants after harvest and verified this principle. For example, the (feminized) seeds I had planted directly into a 3 gallon container grew well and produced great weed, but down inside the soil, the roots had grown in long thick branches, and fairly large volumes of soil had almost no roots at all. The tendency of the roots to grow in the "water channels" (for example along the sides of the container) was undeniable. But in the pots where I grew regular seeds (and transplanted 1 gal to 3 gal after sexing) there were nice thick gnarly root masses.

I wonder if anybody else has had a similar experience?

I also think that one of the reasons hydroponics produces (slightly) better weed is because hydroponically grown plants ALWAYS form thick bushy root masses (as opposed to long skinny root tendrils).

i have always thought soil grows the best weed. i grew soil my first run and there are nugs that i still cant get to turn out as beautful and full of flavor with hydro. but they are bigger and in the end thats all that im really looking for. sorry i didnt quote, but i definitely wouldnt transplant into 3 gallons right from clone. some mistakes made by doing this are; under watering the medium, watering too often because there is not a solid root structure and there is dirt that is staying wet underneath, this will cause diseases, nutrient deficiencies, and rot. i notice that if i transplant into pots that are too big that only SOME of the plants will start taking off, and they take longer even than if i were to go into a 1 gallon pot first. and the ones that dont take off, there is a good chance they are going to turn into booboos. going from a 1 gallon to a 3.7 gallons (what i flower in) works best for me. as far as over root bounding pots.. i prefer to finish the run and chop the plant i want to be able to pull out the stalk and see a full root system, no wasted dirt. i believe that if your pot is at least a gallon per month the plant is alive that you are not going to over rootbound your pot towhere it is going to stunt extra growth or give you less bud. i pull anywhere from 4-8 ounces per plant depending on the height and how bushy she is, all in 3.7 gallon containers.

when my plants are root bounded or not i seem to average the same yield and quality, what makes the difference to me is plant size. my plants seem to grow faster the longer i hold them in their smaller containers..
