A little help with lighting requirments
Interested in your thoughts.
Most of my crop has finished except for 4 plants that started making seed.
I have decided to grow them out because I really want to try them out.
The deal is the plaqnts are lollipopped and about 2 feet daimater each.
Meaning they fit perfectly under my 1000w rectangle air cooled hood.
We have recently hit the hot part of our summer here and I have a dimmable ballast.
I`m wanting to simply turn off the ballast and let it cool. Keep the 1000w hps
in place but dim it to 6oo.
Should save a tad on the bill and make less heat. I also thinking 1000w is simply wasting resources
in this case. What are your thoughts.
PS According to paperwork the mechanics are very doable. I just wonder about losing bud potential with less light,
Thanks
EDIT: I cranked it down and lowered the light. I`m sure it will be just fine

You should really put a 600 watt bulb in there if you're going to run it on the 600 watt setting. You can dim a 1000 watt bulb to 600, but doing so is very likely to shorten the life of the bulb.
Of course you're going to yield less with 600 watts as opposed to 1000, unless you just don't have a full canopy under the 1000 watts.

Thats the deal. With these 4 I have a full canopy. I did wonder about bulb life though.
Maybe I will pick up a 600 watt bulb as that makes sense.
I think if it cools off I will run the 1000. I need to get a better cooling system going but
Its not an option right now. My room is running 85-90 in this heat. I`m sure its not a deal breaker
but It jsut feels crappy to me. Thanks

I found a 600 to do a great job of illuminating a 4x4 space. I would do it that way. You don't need a high-zoot 600 either ... a $20 bulb will do
for this application imo. cn

Nice. 20 sounds good. I need to have an extra arouns anyway for emergencies.

the more light you can give them the better but they only need like 50w per plant as a minimum IMO

Yeah thats kind of the crux of the matter. Am I just throwing pennies away by running a 1000 just because I have it.
However if it makes that much of a difference to overload a plant than by all means I would run it even if
it was for a few plants. I really need to bite the bullet and educate myself on this matter. Its just hard to get motivated
when I know im within the ballpark lol

UPDATE: While the room is nice and cool today the light being emited looks sick and weak.
Gonna go get a new 600 bulb and compare having a dimmed 1000 or just switching to 600.
i predict a big difference.
EDIT: Ended up paying bout 60 bucks for the better bulb but Thats the price
you pay when you shop close to home.
But there is a notable difference in light output.
Couple that with the decreased bulb life when dimming a 1000 it is a no brainer.
Thanks all for the input. I`m off to scream in my ladybugs faces about the shit job they are doing.
