ok, at home depot, they have these 35 watt up to 150 watt hps bulbs that look like they can screw right into a normal light socket. but the box says you cannot stick it in a normal socket.

why is this? why couldnt i throw a light socket up in a homemade hood and plug her in?

Won't work. It does not have a "filament" in it like a regular incandescent light. It needs to be started with a big kick of juice. It gets this from the ballast that is required to run of these lights.

would home depot happen to carry these ballasts?

I don't think so actually. If you are looking at getting HPS.....look at High Tech Garden Supply online. They have some great deals.

yeah they do..they have 150w hps lights. it has the hood and socket and a built in ballast on the hood. only 99 dollars..jus plug into a wall
and they have floodlights that fit like 50 watt hps bulbs

Correct. The 50w versions are perfect for a single plant, but the 150w ones are a rip, since for 60$ more you can get a 400w HPS with a reflector.

if your planning on spending that much at hd you might aswell scrape up just a lil more and get a 400hps,your gonna spend close to the price on the 150w.trust me i almost did the same and rigging up wires and messing with electricity aint no joke!take your time and get it done right!!400w hps and your light problems r solved!just a thought.....gl,ras

are the 400w lightin hood/reflector the same size as a 150w or 250w?
